Mary Schuwerk, PA-C, MPH

About

Mary Evelyn Schuwerk is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and licensed by the Texas Medical Board. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Central Texas PA Society and is an active member of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Advanced Practice Providers, the Texas Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Texas Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy (TSGE).

She is drawn to gastroenterology for its complex pathophysiology, and enjoys helping her patients find simple yet meaningful ways to improve their quality of life. Prior to specializing in gastroenterology, she practiced in pain management for three years, where she developed a strong foundation in caring for patients with chronic and complex conditions.

Before pursuing her physician assistant (PA) education at Pacific University in Portland, Oregon, Mary earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. During her academic journey, she served as an advisory member to the Texas Bleeding Disorders Advisory Council, contributing to efforts to expand access to high-quality care for individuals living with bleeding disorders within the State of Texas. After completing her MPH in 2008, she spent a year in Spain immersing herself in the language and culture.

Prior to her graduate studies, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where she competed and ranked nationally in women’s collegiate powerlifting. 

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, she enjoys spending time with her daughter and Shih Tzu-Maltese, Bo. Outside of work, she stays active through hiking, tennis, and paddleboarding, and loves traveling and exploring new restaurants.
